About half a decade Carmina Burana
To mark the 75th anniversary of Carmina Burana will be presented from June 21, 2012, this exhibition at the State Library in Munich. "Everything I have written and unfortunately you can have printed, pulped Now. With Carmina Burana, my collected works begin. " Said Carl Orff his Verlger after the successful trial of this composition, which on June 8, 1937 at the Opera House on Main and helped Fankfurt uraufgefüht Orff for his breakthrough.
The work presents an entirely new form of musical theater and that led to a decisive turning point in his life. As Texvorlage Orff used the Codex Buranus, a medieval manuscript collection of Latin poetry, which was named after its original storage Benediktbeuern and 1220-1250 either in Styria or was in South Tyrol. As a result of secularization in 1803, she came to Munich, where she has since been found in the Bavarian Staatsbibliothekzu.
In the spring of 1934 Orff discovered by chance in this collection Antiquartiatskatalog Wuerzburg and was immediately very impressed by it. He was fascinated by the issue of diversity, which reflects the time-consciousness, sensual joy of life and expresses the fusion of ancient and Christian spirit displayed. In addition, inspired him the Latin language, because it symbolizes a "dead language" in his view, the supra-temporal. The Codex Buranus consists of more than 250 mostly Latin hymns and poems, interspersed with Middle High German verse and romantic sprinkling. Classified into four major departments discussed, it is moral and satirical poems, love songs, drinking songs and players, as well as spiritual dramas. The unique design of Carmina Burana and large diversified wealth justify the extraordinary popularity of this work. So it is hardly conceivable that Orfss looking for a premiere venue for this first piece of music was very difficult and it was only ten months after the augfgeführt completion for the first time. Was it the part of Nazi cultural policy because of the Latin text and the presentation of the Christian Middle Ages were objections, which finally premiered on June 8, 1937 held in Frankfurt am Main. The success of the audience was large and of the press were numerous Lpbeshymnen for the 41-year-old composer. In addition, however, criticized Nazi ideologues e.g. the "Latin monk," the "Jazz mood", the "lapidary style of music" and the "inflexibility of rhythmic elements," which was understood as a "sign of exotic music practice." Although there was never an official ban on the Carmina Burana, but they were controversial and were still viewed with suspicion. In 1940, the Staatstheater Dresden presented under the baton of Karl Böhm, a performance that was hailed as a "triumphant success". Herbert von Karajan, she conducted in 1941 in Aachen and Berlin, and a presentation in Zurich the same year the song came from abroad. In addition to three new productions, and some recovery in Germany in 1942, there were performances at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in 1944 was followed by Amsterdam and Zagreb. A real world success, the Carmina Burana, however, was only after 1945. Today it is one of the most popular and most performed choral orchestral works in music history.
